Man I'm mellloooww..

and no, I'm not on any mood altering substances. I'm basking in the American tradition of sitting in my recliner on Christmas day, surrounded by torn paper, empty boxes and screaming kids arguing over toys.

I've got the digital music on the soft rock channel and the kids just went out to compare Christmas with the rest of the neighborhood. I'm getting sick (again). I have a fever, and my throat and head hurt. But that is ok. To coin a phrase from The Christmas Story, "All is right with the world".

I want to send a shout out to my blog buddy Sis B. She is going through some very tough shit right now. I just want her to know that she is on my mind.

I am smoking a brisket on the back porch and it is smelling pretty good. Being in Texas, brisket is sought after cuisine. I don't do a whole lot of things good in life, but I must toot my own horn when it comes to cooking. The other thing I do good is....well, I digress. My wife is sitting next to me reading this and will smack me if I get "orally" into that.

So anyway, I hope everyone who reads this has a very happy holiday season. As usual, I'd like to ask that everyone take a moment to think of the military men and women who are scattered around the world away from their loved ones.

So, I'm gonna enjoy this mellow feeling and try to "enjoy the moment".

Paul,

I think you'll appreciate this story.

My mom, knowing she had a layover on a recent trip, packed holiday cards in her carry on bag. As she was getting ready to wrap up her card-writing task and board the plane, she saw a serviceman sitting nearby. She quickly scrawled, "Thank you for your service to our great country." She enclosed a $100 bill and tucked the card in his hand saying, "Feel free to open it later!" She then boarded her plane.

Glad you had a great holiday!

Pnut,
Wow! your mom's is one of the nicest gestures I've ever heard of.

I've had folks pay for my meals in restauarnts and I've had folks just walk right up to me and thank me for serving.

Having a citizen express their gratitude really restores my commitment to my career.

I'm proud of her. She also wrote a letter to the editor of our newspaper that encouraged other travelers to carry a handful of blank holiday cards in case their paths crossed with a serviceman or woman. Pretty cool.
