Another Saturday night

Well, it's Saturday night and the video above reminds me of my Saturday nights at the skating rink. If you're in your 40's or so, you probably spent some of the late 70's and early 80's in the skating rink. Do you remember hanging out all day at the mall, lake, river or just cruising the strip? For me, Friday nights were spent at the football game or some school event, but Saturday's were reserved for the "Golden Gate Skating Rink" in D'Iberville, Ms. Here's how a Saturday night in 1980ish would have gone for me:

About 6:00 pm or so, I'd come home and eat a quick supper with my family, visit just long enough to appease the parents, then go get cleaned up in preparation to make the scene at the skating rink. My attire would consist of a pair of Levis bell bottoms (must be faded), a black concert t-shirt and canvas Nike tennis shoes with the light blue swish (must be canvas with light blue swish). Accouterments consisted of big plastic afro comb with handle sticking out of back pocket and a pack of dynteene gum.

Me, Steve Douglas, and Tim Fossee all lived within 30 minutes walking distance (if you cut through the woods) from each other and we'd meet up at the corner Majik Market (A southern convenience store). We'd usually get a wino in the woods to buy us a 6 pack of beer to split and slam 2 beers each, then we'd head off for the rink.

Once inside, we'd play video games and hang out until we got bored and then we'd skate. About 10:00pm would end the "first session" of skating, and all the little kids (uncool kids too) would leave. About 10:15pm would start the "second session" and that's when the fun would happen. The refs would let you speed skate, they would play some of the more "adult" type of music and the skate games would be awesome. If you've never played in a round of "paddle skate", you aint lived... The refs would give a wooden paddle to one of the regular hottie girls and she would get on one end of the rink. All of the guys would get on the opposite end of the rink, in a pack. Then she would take off and chase the pack. If she caught you, she would tap you on the butt with the paddle and you were out. The last guy out usually won a free pass and would get to couple skate with her.... If memory serves me, I actually won one time and got to couple skate with some hot older chick.

Man, all these memories make me want to load the family up and go skating... Hell, I have free medical insurance...

Have a groovy night...

Hey Paul! Sorry I havent stopped by I lost my favorites list. Still having some computer issues...
Cadet is pretty excited and wishes he could leave sooner. I think that Crash may be going too...he just wants infantry. Wouldnt that be so weird if ALL of my sons went into the military? Yes I spent my fair share of time in a skating rink, but my parents REALLY hated it if we "bombed town" (same as cruising I suppose) if only they realized that by telling me NOT to do it, its all I EVER did...... I love the commodores song and the heatwave song, gonna put them on my IPOD since i HAVE been to the gym...come on poop head!! Get moving!!!

Hey Paul. Yep, that describes me on a Friday night growing up in the late 70's and early 80's. LOL I can remember the packed skating rink filled with every kid in town and disco music blasting overhead and a disco ball spinning. Those were the days. -Jim
